La stanza da pranzo (o per chiamarla con una parola meno usata ma più puramente italiana) il tinello, deve pur essa aver gran parte delle nostre cure, perchè è il luogo dove le persone si radunano per mangiare, e, stanche delle fatiche della giornata, cercano riposo per il corpo e calma per lo spirito. Questa viene in genere scelta fra le stanze più arieggiate e più soleggiate dell'alloggio, giacchè il sole non è soltanto nemico mortale dei microbi e della polvere, ma infonde allegria e riscalda, mettendo una nota gaia anche negli ambienti più tetri e melanconici. La luce troppo viva e smagliante, può essere mitigata da leggere tendine e da tende, più gentili e graziose se ricamate, anche semplicemente ... La qualità dei mobili è indifferente, e varia secondo la condizione ed il gusto della padrona di casa; sono sempre però simpatici i salotti da pranzo in tinta chiara ed allegra, dove troneggia fra la credenza ed il servent uno di quegli armadi a vetro chiamati cristalliere, dove gli oggetti di porcellana, di vetro e d'argento fanno simpatica mostra di sè, senza il pericolo d'impolverarsi facilmente e di rompersi ... Sui mobili e sulle poltrone non devono sfoggiare i ricami più fini della casa, le cose più delicate; i cuscini e gli appoggiateste siano di stoffe solide, di colori resistenti alla lavatura, e di ricami semplici e forti ... Quando non si abbia una stanza di disimpegno, ed il tinello sia la stanza favorita per trascorrervi gran parte della giornata, i mobili, per quanto eleganti, sian sempre sobrii e pratici ... Qualche pianta verde da appartamento e qualche fiore variopinto, possono dare un'intonazione fresca e ridente alla stanza; e questa intonazione, unita ad un ordine perfetto, influisce sul nostro spirito, rendendolo più tranquillo, più amante della pace, e stimolandolo al lavoro, allo studio, alla preghiera.
